I got the go ahead for spaghetti straps for the princess dress. Here's a sketch of the re-designed bodice. I'm not sure what fabric I'm going to use...something inexpensive as we are, after all, talking about a play dress. Another reason for an inexpensive fabric is that I think it's going to take yards and yards of it counting petticoats, etc.But at the same time, I want it to look very princess like. I haven't been to the fabric store in ages - it's safer that way - but I think it's time for a trip.

Polyorganza for the skirt and ruffles, bows etc, maybe some satin for the front of the bodice and the rest of it could be jersey, could also think about putting some lace in some places, just my 2 c's
I know a couple of Moms who refashioned thrift store prom dresses into little girl's play dresses. I look forward to seeing this. It looks totally adorable. And you're quite good at the sketching thing!

Charity's idea was exellent, hm... if it was me going I'm pretty sure a lot would jump into my cart, have fun:-)
A lot might jump into my cart and it just might be that none of it would be suitable for a princess dress but might make, say, and excellent blouse for me!
Are you concerned about washability? If so, synthetics, poly and such, would probably be the way to go. This looks like it will be quite the gown for this little princess!

I'm here from Gateway Pundit too, and have also been asked by my daughter to make a tutu for my 2 year old granddaughter.
When her two cousins (on her Dad's side see it, there will be two more to make, I fear but they will be SO cute together.
Your top design is really cute and I may steal it, just substituting yards of (thankfully inexpensive) tulle for a long tutu instead of a short one.
Then she can be a princess and a ballerina.
I second the thrift store idea. My youngest (now 27) pranced around in many of those when she was younger.
Looking forward to seeing the finished project!
